In November, the road to protecting Union jobs and workers’ rights runs right through the Missouri State Senate. For example, due to term limits, Senate District 17 is now an open seat. If this seat falls into the hands of the anti-Labor candidate, Jerry Nolte, then the GOP effort to bring back Right-to-Work has a clearer shot.
The good news is, we can stop these attacks on working families by protecting this seat, and I am honored to be the candidate who is in this fight to win.
My name is Maggie Nurrenbern, and as a fourth-generation union member, I know how important labor unions are to our communities, our economy, and our families. Senate District 17 spans all of southern Clay County and encompasses the communities of Kansas City, North Kansas City, Gladstone, Claycomo and Pleasant Valley.
As a mom and a former teacher, I know the importance of quality public education. Since 2020, I have been honored to serve in the Missouri House where I fought to fully fund Missouri’s public schools. In the state senate, I will continue working to raise teacher pay, increase funding for our public schools, and ensure a 5-day school week.
Meanwhile, my opponent’s track record is very, very different. Jerry Nolte is a longtime politician who has made a career out of lowering wages, attacking unions, and siding with corporations over middle class families.
When he was in the State House, Nolte wrote a bill to stop Missouri from raising the minimum wage and repeatedly supported legislation that would actually LOWER the minimum wage for thousands of Missouri workers. He then turned around and sponsored legislation to give a massive tax cut to corporations. That’s right – while middle class families struggled, Nolte instead focused on helping his wealthy campaign donors.
Nolte also voted to slash Medicaid funding which eliminated coverage for more than 90,000 Missourians, including 18,000 people with disabilities. If he makes it to the Senate, he will pick up right where he left off in attacking healthcare for working families across the state. Missouri deserves better than Nolte’s brand of reckless leadership that hurts workers and families.
Personally, I believe Missouri must raise the minimum wage, guarantee earned sick leave for workers, protect Union rights, and end the chaos that has defined the Capitol for so long.
With the support of Missouri’s working men and women, I know we can win this November. And when we win, we will win much more than an election, we will win a better future for our kids, communities, and Labor Unions.
