Women’s Committee manager, Tina Richard, was pleasantly surprised by the massive support of IBEW 124 E-Board for Habitat for Humanity Women’s Build project. As a journeywomen who tested into the hall with 20 years of experience, topped with 3 years in the union, she continues to learn the history of her local. The Board discussed that H4H Women’s Build was another community project that was dropped during COVID restrictions. They encouraged her to increase from one team to two, knowing previous years of involvement. IBEW 124 membership would sponsor two homes for May 13th. The Women’s Committee also reach out to employers for paid volunteer time off receiving support from Electrical Corporation of America, Mark One Electric, and Pro Electric LC. It allowed apprentices to attend without worry of lost time. Community work can’t always be left up to the weekend.
Tina’s first involvement with H4H was with Truman Habitat for Humanity when she was interested in changing careers to the trades for a better living. After starting her apprenticeship, she would send women interested in construction to volunteer with the Habitat. “You get to work with your hands and see if you like it. You might also learn some homeowner repair tips.” Projects are either remodels or new builds based on resources. The homeowners are also required to be part of their build called sweat equity. Tina experienced the community impact when one homeowner recognized her from her build years later. “I volunteered for a lot of things, but this is the first project that I saw I really was helping my neighbor.”
Women Build is a movement that supports female-led families in achieving strength, stability, and independence by establishing a legacy of homeownership. A large percentage of our Habitat KC families are led by single mothers. These households frequently face occupational segregation, pay discrimination, and disproportionate caregiving burdens. Women Build addresses the unique needs of women-led households, providing crucial support to overcome bias and barriers. IBEW 124 Women’s Committee is open for all IBEW 124 members to bring their ideas and interests to grow sibling involvement and support on and off the field. Meets 2nd Wednesday of the month at 6pm before general meetings. Location downstairs in the Retirees Hall, rear parking is available.
